Inspiration

My inspiration for this track comes from many of the musical genres I listen to daily like Hip-Hop, Pop, and New-Age music. This track incorporates electronic and acoustic-sounding instruments to appeal to more listeners. This could work well for rap beats, in-menu video game music, and commercial music for television and radio advertisements.

Rhythm/Bass

The rhythmic aspects of both sections are based on common time backbeat rhythms but have different feels because of the change in tempo. The first section uses electronic drums and is slower and calmer, while the second section has acoustic drums that are faster and incorporate an extra snare hit at the “and” of 4. Both bass parts are synth based but differ in that the second section has more movement in range and arrangement for a lighter, memorable and cheerful groove.

Harmony/Melody

Section one is in the key of E flat minor and uses 3 diatonic minor chords and one diminished chord: | Ebm | Bbm | Gb | Fº. The second section is in the key of D major made up of 4 diatonic chords: | D | A | G | Em. The chords in the first section sound mysterious, gloomy, and sour opposite to the second section which sounds jolly and welcoming. The first section rises and falls melodically and sounds spacious, warm, and distant as opposed to the second section’s drier, note-bending electric guitar.  The melody for the second section has a stronger motif while both do create an arch-shaped melody.

Recording/Synth/Sampler

My audio recording (tracks 200 & 201) is a recording of myself clapping as a percussive addition to create more groove and contrast within both sections. My original synths (tracks 195 & 197) was created using Sculpture and are heard in the chord progression and bass part of the second section. The sampler is the melody for section two (track 199) sampled from an Apple loop electric guitar.

Processing

My dynamic effects were simple additions to create space and presence for each instrument/sound. I added a compressor to my hi-hats (tracks 85 & 110), and channel eq on my sampler guitar (track 199) including almost all of the other tracks. Both of my time-based effects are my reverb (bus 26) on the snare 2 (track 68) for texture and imaging and my chorus (bus 27) on the bass 2 (track 195) for more low-end width and weight.

Key: F# Major

Tempo: 70 BPM

Song Form: Intro-Verse-Bridge-Chorus

Lyrics:

A Verse 1

I gave you my heart

Right from the start

But you made it hard

Then we fell apart

Don’t know what to do

Between me and you

So I play it cool

Still Iook like a fool

Bridge

Let me go

Or let me know

If you wanna stay

Then with me you got a place

Chorus

Do you like this

Do you like that

Cause I want you

I need you real bad

Baby bring it right back

Verse 2

Falling for you

Imaging you

Right next to me

Perfect as can we be

Swear that your love for me

Is like ecstasy

What else can I do to have you stay with me?

Chorus 2

Chorus

Do you like this

Do you like that

Cause I want you

I need you real bad

Baby bring it right back
